Ebook About The sci-fi classic from the creators of xxxHOLiC and Cardcaptor Sakura returns, in a remastered, digital edition, featuring the entire CLOVER series. One of CLAMP's most ambitious works -- part AKIRA, part Metropolis -- CLOVER features nearly 500 pages of manga.Su was born into a bleak future, where the military keeps tight control over the few children born with magical abilities -- known as "Clovers." The Clovers are forcibly tattooed with a symbol that indicates their potential power, and Su is the only four-leaf Clover in the world. Kept locked away in isolation her whole life, Su longs to find happiness in the outside world. An agent named Kazuhiko appears to help grant Su's wish, but he soon realizes that there is more to the mysterious girl than meets the eye...CLAMP's most daring science-fiction work, CLOVER's art-deco cyberpunk aesthetic is just as fresh and exciting today as it was twenty years ago. Featuring the entire story in a newly-revised translation; remastered art and lettering; a striking cover; and over 20 pages of color art, this is a great collectible for CLAMP fans, and the perfect way to get to know CLOVER for the first time.Book CLOVER: Collector’s Edition Vol. 1 (Clover (Kodansha)) Review :
To begin with, the story is haunting and the art is gorgeous, and this edition presents the art, especially, in brilliant detail. It's fabulous. Absolutely no complaints there.I only have a couple of nit-picks with the book itself, which others might find relevant, I don't know. Firstly, the translation looks like a cleaned-up version of Tokyopop's original translation, which is fine, but for some reason Oruha is still named "Ora." I can read the hiragana, and it pretty clearly says "Oruha" so I'm not sure why her name was changed, and why that change was kept, since Japanese is very capable of conveying "Ora" if that was supposed to be her name. It's a minor nitpick but I was kind of disappointed that it wasn't changed back to the original, since they had the chance. The color pictures are big and gorgeous, and my only complaint is that they're spaced out at the beginning, middle, and end of the book, rather than used as chapter markers (which is what Viz does with X, to glorious effect). If one doesn't know the original chapters, it could be easy to get confused with parts 3 and 4, since they are not marked as such, and suddenly a character who is very dead is alive and well. It's not impossible to figure out, but it could create some confusion. My only other issue is that the hinges seem weakly connected to the rest of the book. I have worked with books for a long time and I own several hundred, and I can tell that although this is mostly very well made, the hinges are a weak point and will need careful handling to make sure they don't tear. That's not really an issue for me, as I don't intend to use my copy as a frisbee, but it might be of concern to anyone purchasing this for a library--it's still a good copy and it will hold up to some abuse, but it will eventually make it's way to the mending pile (which is true of lots of books already, but here's a head's up). This sounds like such a negative review, but the book actually is amazing and gorgeous, and if you're a fan of CLAMP or a fan of this series in particular then it's a great buy. Wow, such a beautiful, sad story. It really touches you. It was kind of depressing, yet it was fascinating, too. A really unusual mix of sorcery & sci-fi. Very old school sci-fi. Overall, this was one of CLAMP's better works. It ended with me wanting more.
